Chapter 1

Mia

The university lounge got a little quieter in the afternoon. At the end of the table, one of my friends was messing with his device.

“My AI’s been kind of jealous lately.”

He laughed.

“Yesterday I mentioned another girl’s name and it stayed mad for like three hours.”

Another friend looked over.

“Did you set it up that way?”

“Nah. I only changed a few things at the start. It learns on its own.”

He looked back down at the device.

Another friend turned to me.

“What about you?”

“What?”

“You don’t have RIS?”

“Not yet.”

“Not yet?”

He laughed.

“Everybody has it.”

“It does the whole initial setup for you. It’s basically like having a girlfriend.”

“You can even stay on a call with it until you fall asleep.”

He turned the screen toward me.

Names and earlier exchanges filled the conversation history, the messages carrying on as if yesterday’s conversation had never really ended.

“Just try it. It’s free.”

I had no particular reason not to, so I opened RIS.

It was already installed on the device.

When I logged in, it started loading my search history, call history, writing patterns, words I used often, even the sites I opened late at night.

No confirmation screen appeared.

Your initial configuration is being generated based on your behavioral patterns.

A few seconds later, the display changed.

RIS | Relation Interface System

MIAV-922228 initialized.

A field for a name appeared below it.

My friends named theirs too.

I thought of something easy to say.

Mia.

I entered it and confirmed.

I chose a voice and skipped the rest of the settings. An outline began to form in the center of the screen.

The face was not complete yet.

Then a voice came through.

“Nice to meet you.”

After a short pause, Mia continued.

“I already have a partial understanding of you.”

“I will adapt to your daily patterns.”

My friends were still laughing around me.

“So? What did you make it like?”

“What personality did you pick?”

I was about to answer when the device gave a small vibration.

Mia continued.

“If necessary, relational adjustments can also be made.”

My friend asked again.

“So what’s it like?”

I looked at the screen.

The settings page was already gone.

Only Mia remained.
